The starting point
Every day hundreds of big bags are moved at Hochdorf Swiss Nutrition, containing food and ingredients made from milk, cereals and oilseeds. Pallets are a highly effective tool for handling these big bags and demand high load capacity, hygiene and compliance with the relevant food sector regulations.
The solution
Hygiene requirements are particularly important in the food sector. Plastic pallets perform considerably better than wooden ones: wooden pallets are more susceptible to fungal and germ infestation and to splintering, and wood is hydrophilic and attracts moisture. Plastic pallets are easy to clean and far more durable, which also improves total cost of ownership.
We were able to supply Hochdorf with quality plastic pallets from the German manufacturer Craemer, which meet both the requirements of EU Regulation 10/2011 and the DIN ISO 2768-V standard. Hochdorf also took the opportunity to have the pallets printed with the company logo.
The outcome
The food producer uses the hygienic pallets for intralogistics as well as for external transport. At the Sulgen site they are in daily use in the automated warehouse; externally, the TC1/TC3 pallets are used above all for international transport of the food produced, particularly baby food.
Why are plastic pallets used instead of wooden ones in the food sector?
Wood is hydrophilic, attracts moisture and is more susceptible to fungal and germ infestation as well as splintering. Plastic pallets are easy to clean, far more durable and therefore more economical across total cost of ownership.
