At a glance

Plastic drinking water tanks are containers for the hygienically safe storage and transport of drinking water. Because the water is intended for human consumption, strict requirements apply to the materials used: they must not impart taste, odour or substances to the water and must be microbiologically safe. The reference standards in Germany are the DVGW guideline W 270 and the KTW assessment basis, and in Switzerland food law. PE-HD is the usual choice – UV-stabilised, cold-tough and food-contact compliant; PP is used at higher temperatures and for weldable special constructions. Which container is suitable depends on volume, placement, temperature window and required records – conformity is proven product- and application-specifically.

Why Semadeni for Drinking water tanks and plastic water containers

Hygienically compliant

PE-HD and PP types can meet DVGW W 270 and the KTW requirements – proof is provided product- and application-specifically, not blanket.

Outdoor placement possible

UV-stabilised PE-HD is suitable for outdoor placement and stays flexible at low temperatures; in severe frost, insulation or trace heating is advisable.

Material by temperature

PE-HD covers the usual range up to around 60 °C; PP is the better choice for higher temperatures and weldable special constructions.

Wide volume range

Standard 10 to 1,000 litres, up to 10,000 litres on request – with flange connection, drain tap and level indicator.

Without BPA and plasticisers

PE-HD and PP contain no bisphenol A and no plasticisers – suitable for permanent food and drinking-water contact.

Typical set-up

Emergency water reserve for a municipal aid organisation

A typical scenario: for a decentralised emergency water reserve, the choice falls on UV-stabilised PE-HD storage tanks with drain tap and level indicator, because they remain durably resistant outdoors and are easy to clean. We define volume, placement and required conformity records together; for disinfection, the relevant DVGW data sheets apply.

Frequently asked questions about Drinking water tanks and plastic water containers

Question not listed?

We're happy to answer it personally.

Get in touch
What is DVGW W 270 and why does it matter?

DVGW W 270 is the German guideline on the microbiological safety of materials in contact with drinking water. It complements the chemical-hygienic requirements of the KTW assessment basis and is, in Germany, a prerequisite for using containers in the drinking-water sector.

Which material is better for drinking water tanks – PE-HD or PP?

PE-HD is the usual choice: UV-stable, cold-tough, food-contact compliant and economical, suitable up to around 60 °C. PP is recommended for higher temperatures (e.g. hot-water reserves) and is readily weldable for made-to-measure special constructions.

Can I place a drinking water tank outdoors?

Yes – UV-stabilised PE-HD is suitable for outdoor placement and stays flexible at low temperatures. Mind frost protection: in severe frost we recommend insulation or trace heating, and the tank should not freeze brim-full.

Which volumes does Semadeni offer for drinking water tanks?

Standard range 10 to 1,000 litres. For larger volumes up to 10,000 litres or special dimensions we manufacture on request – including flange connections, drain tap and level indicator.

How do I clean a plastic drinking water tank?

Rinse new tanks with clear water before first filling. For ongoing disinfection, the relevant DVGW data sheets give reference points (e.g. limited chlorination). Do not use aggressive cleaners – they can impair food suitability.
