The starting point

Each of us produces around 500 litres of urine a year – and with it, valuable substances such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, boron, iron and zinc are simply flushed away. Vuna GmbH from Dübendorf in Switzerland keeps these substances in the loop and produces the plant fertiliser AURIN from recycled urine.

AURIN contains no heavy metals; all pollutants are eliminated during the production process. The substances responsible for the smell of urine, such as ammonia, are also removed beforehand.

The solution

The packaging is produced by Logo Plastic GmbH in Königstein – part of the Semadeni Industry Group – from 100 % recycled PET. Old bottles become new bottles: they do not end up as waste in the sea or on land, and energy is saved because the material only has to be reprocessed rather than newly produced. The packaging is also free of bisphenol A (BPA).

The outcome

AURIN has been approved as a fertiliser by the Federal Office for Agriculture. One 500 ml bottle fertilises 10 plants for 5 months – double recycling, in the contents as well as the packaging.

What does «double recycling» mean for AURIN?

Both the contents and the packaging come from the loop: the fertiliser is recovered from recycled urine, and the bottle is made from 100 % recycled PET at Logo Plastic GmbH's Königstein plant.
