At a glance

Plastic laboratory bottles and containers are tightly sealable vessels for storing, transporting and dosing liquids in the lab. The material defines the operating window: polypropylene (PP) is translucent, well resistant to chemicals and generally steam-sterilisable; high-density polyethylene (PE-HD) is robust against many alkalis and dilute acids; PE-LD stays soft enough for squeeze bottles – of which only the dropper bottle doses drop-precisely; PFA (perfluoroalkoxy) covers high purity and aggressive media. Which bottle fits follows from the medium, the operating temperature, the sterilisation method, the required transparency and any transport regulations. We verify suitability and conformity by product and by use – there is no blanket material approval in the lab.

Why Semadeni for Choosing the right plastic laboratory bottles and containers

Material matched to the medium

PP for aqueous solutions and autoclaving, PE-HD for many alkalis and dilute acids, PFA for high purity – the choice is made by medium and temperature, never blanket.

Autoclavable where required

PP laboratory bottles are typically steam-sterilisable up to 121 °C (standard per EN 285). The actual cycle resistance is product- and application-specific.

Tight screw closures

Matching screw closures ensure safe storage and leak-protected sample transport.

Conformity on evidence

We issue declarations of conformity to EU 10/2011 for food contact by product and by batch, on request.

Dangerous goods options

Selected PE-HD containers are available with UN type approval; the approval applies per design type and filling, not across the board.

Procurement from a single source

Over 8,000 articles from stock, complemented by custom manufacturing from our own Swiss production and marking in Ostermundigen.

  • 1952 Swiss family business founded
  • 8'000+ articles from stock
  • 5 ISO certificates
  • EcoVadis Gold independent sustainability rating (top 5 %)

Evidence & compliance

Audited processes, documented conformity

Semadeni AG is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, EN ISO 13485, ISO 22000 and ISO/TS 22002-4 and rated EcoVadis Gold (84/100). Data sheets and declarations of conformity are supplied on request, per product and application rather than as a blanket document.

Typical set-up

Reagent and buffer bottles for a diagnostics laboratory

A typical selection scenario: for autoclavable buffer solutions the choice falls on translucent PP narrow-neck bottles with GL 45 cap, because they allow repeated steam sterilisation and visual level control. For aggressive cleaning agents PE-HD wide-neck bottles complete the set, and for drop-precise indicators dropper bottles with an allround or vertical dropper. Which combination works in the individual case is clarified by medium, temperature and cleaning protocol.

  • Translucent PP narrow-neck bottles with GL 45 closure
  • PE-HD wide-neck bottles for aggressive detergents
  • Dropper bottles with allround or vertical dropper for indicators

In detail

Plastic laboratory bottles and containers: safe, chemically resistant, autoclavable

Plastic laboratory bottles and containers are part of everyday work in Life Science and industrial labs. Semadeni offers a wide selection in PP (polypropylene), PE-HD (high-density polyethylene), PE-LD and PFA (perfluoroalkoxy) – depending on the requirements for temperature resistance, chemical resistance and optical transparency. Which material holds up follows from the specific medium and the operating temperature.

Materials and their fields of use

MaterialIndicative max. temp.TransparencyTypical application
PP (polypropylene)up to ~121 °C (autoclavable)translucentbuffers, aqueous solutions, sterilisation
PE-HDup to ~80 °Copaquealkalis, dilute acids, solvents
PE-LDup to ~60 °Csemi-transparentsqueeze bottles: dropper bottles for dosing, wash bottles for rinsing

The temperature values are indicative reference points; the permissible continuous service temperature depends on the part, the medium and the load.

Construction features

  • Tight screw closures for safe storage and transport
  • Wide-neck and narrow-neck versions for different filling and withdrawal techniques
  • Graduation printed or engraved for direct volume reading
  • UN type approval (e.g. UN 3H1) for hazardous substances – type- and filling-specific, on request

Standards reference and conformity

Depending on the version, PP and PE-HD laboratory bottles can meet the following requirements – the evidence is provided by product and by use:

  • EU Regulation 10/2011 (food contact) – declaration of conformity on request
  • Autoclavability per EN 285 / moist-heat sterilisation per EN ISO 17665 for PP, typically 121 °C
  • UN type approval per ADR/RID for dangerous-goods-rated containers

Selection and advice

Semadeni stocks laboratory bottles and containers from around 30 ml to 60 litres, complemented by storage containers up to 500 litres for stock-keeping. For special requirements – such as food-contact materials (EU 10/2011, product-specific), cleanroom filling or customer-specific labelling – our specialists are on hand to advise.

Frequently asked questions about Choosing the right plastic laboratory bottles and containers

Question not listed?

We're happy to answer it personally.

Get in touch
Which laboratory bottles are autoclavable?

PP laboratory bottles are generally autoclavable up to 121 °C / 1 bar / around 20 min (standard per EN 285). PE-HD is only partially autoclavable and may deform. PE-LD, PS and PMMA are not suitable for steam sterilisation. Cycle resistance is to be verified by product.

Which closure do I need for my laboratory bottle?

Screw caps are the lab standard. Which one fits depends on the neck size, the medium and the required tightness. Semadeni stocks matching closures in PP, PE-HD and PFA.

Are there laboratory bottles with UN approval for hazardous substances?

Yes – selected PE-HD containers are available with UN type approval (e.g. 3H1) for transporting hazardous liquids. The approval is type- and filling-specific, not a general property of the material.

From what volume does Semadeni supply laboratory bottles and containers?

Our laboratory bottles and containers range from around 30 ml to 60 litres; for stock-keeping, storage containers up to 500 litres complete the range. Special volumes and customer-specific labelling (screen printing, labels) on request.

Are PP laboratory bottles suitable for food contact?

PP types can meet the requirements of EU 10/2011 – suitability is, however, product- and batch-specific and does not apply blanket. For the evidence Semadeni issues declarations of conformity on request.

Unsure which laboratory bottle fits your medium?

Tell us the medium, operating temperature, sterilisation method and quantity – we recommend material, bottle shape and closure and verify conformity as well as custom manufacturing. Personal advice from Ostermundigen and Vienna.
