The starting point
The City of Zurich measures air quality using passive samplers (Palmes type). The method quantifies the share of the air pollutant nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) in ambient air, which is then analysed and evaluated in a laboratory.
Passive samplers consist of several components, one of which is the threaded protective cap. It holds stainless steel meshes impregnated with a chemical on which the NO₂ sorbs. For a successful measurement the meshes have to fit precisely into the caps and be protected from sunlight.
The solution
It was with exactly these requirements that the City of Zurich approached Semadeni. Thanks to our worldwide procurement network we were able to find precisely fitting, opaque protective caps that close flush and airtight.
The outcome
The caps enable an accurate measurement. Since 1985, when the first air pollution control measures were introduced, the air has been analysed and monitored continuously – the passive samplers are part of that measurement series.
How is air quality measured with passive samplers?
Palmes-type passive samplers quantify the share of nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) in ambient air. The NO₂ sorbs onto impregnated stainless steel meshes held in an opaque threaded protective cap; the sample is then evaluated in a laboratory.
