The starting point

Every hospital works under the basic requirement of keeping operations as germ-free as possible. Hands are in constant use in hospital routine, whether in nursing or kitchen work, and bacteria and germs can spread quickly.

Staff at Stadtspital Triemli in Zurich expressed the wish to work with a waste container that could be operated with the foot instead of the hands. That was the starting point for developing a custom waste system.

The solution

Peter Jäger, the inventor of the system, had previously developed, designed and patented a tilting bin. Taking all requirements into account, the system – a watertight, dimensionally stable and lightweight container – was manufactured in plastic by Semadeni and the prototype tested at the Triemli.

The system was built from durable polypropylene. Planning was first carried out with a CAD system, after which the systems were manufactured using in-house technologies: cutting, CNC machining and hot gas welding. Plastic semi-finished products were used, that is sheets, tubes and profiles.

The outcome

The prototype passed the test successfully. Since then at least one of these tilting bins has been in use in every patient room, ward room and in the kitchen of the main building at Stadtspital Triemli. «Effortless, hands-free, hygienic operation is now assured», says developer Peter Jäger.

How is a made-to-measure waste system built from plastic semi-finished products?

Planning is done first with a CAD system, then manufacturing follows from polypropylene sheets, tubes and profiles – using cutting, CNC machining and hot gas welding in-house. The result is a watertight, dimensionally stable and lightweight container.
