"Secret Garden"

"Secret Garden"

The homeowners had not been happy with their garden, which had been designed in 2003, for a long time.

The new apartment blocks were the last straw! The plants in the 420 square meter garden were unable to adequately hide the new buildings, and the quality of life and intimacy of the detached house was increasingly compromised. That was just the tip of the iceberg: The solitary plants were always unfavorably positioned. In its organic form, the old pond did not fit in with the clear architecture of the house. The lawns were broken up too much by bushes and trees, which resulted in an immense amount of maintenance. The privacy screen on the public path leading past the property only served its intended purpose to a limited extent. In addition, the pallet fence only moderately blended into the landscape. Lastly, the wooden decking outside the house was broken. These were all very good reasons suggesting that a complete redesign of the garden was in order, although the initial focus of the homeowners was solely on the renewal of the biotope.

Requirements of the homeowners

One of the Client's main requests was that the garden design should include the element of water. As for plants, white-flowering plants, shrubs and perennials were preferred. The wooden deck, which was used as a garden seating area, had to be replaced so that it would be partially covered by the balcony above. The biotope had to remain in its original place, with the addition of a second biotope on a lower level. The replacement of the pallet fence was also on the “Must-Do” list.

Idea and realization

The basic idea was: “The architectural concept of the house is based on different levels – we will do the same with the water feature in the garden”. The aim: To create a hidden garden world – a “Secret Garden”, which matched the architecture of the house in both form and expression – in the densely-populated residential area, surrounded by blocks of flats. This was implemented with two tailor-made water basins from Semadeni, and two pergola-like steel frames serving as trellises with a privacy screen function. Combined with white climbing roses, three cut dogwoods and the planting of hydrangeas, water lilies and red bells, an atmosphere was achieved that created a dream-like space in the midst of the concrete jungle. A structure made of galvanized, powder-coated steel was created for the terrace, and the wooden deck itself was made of IPE wood (Brazilian walnut wood). However, due to the settlement density, the concrete implementation was characterized by various logistical challenges, including the delivery of the large water basins. The challenges were ultimately met successfully, and the result was convincing. It not only delighted the homeowners – the garden even made the shortlist for the Taspo Awards, the Oscars of the green sector, and won an impressive 3rd prize.

Natural pool

The homeowners wanted the garden to include the element of water, and this was integrated in a straightforward yet modern way. As the central element of the terrace structure, water flowed generously over two levels – from a smaller basin to a larger one. Water lilies and koi fish looked right at home in these watery oases. They were framed by IPE wooden decks and small planted gravel areas. The black plastic water basins from Semadeni were transformed.
