On duty for better air quality

Air is an indispensable component of our life and for that very reason it is important to look after it. First measures towards air quality control were taken in 1985; since then, the air has been continuously analysed and monitored.

The city of Zürich measures the air quality with so-called diffusive samplers (Palmes type). In this method, the proportion of the air pollutant nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in the outdoor air is quantified and subsequently analysed and evaluated in a laboratory.

Diffusive samplers consist of several components, one of which is the threaded cap. It serves as a holder for chromium-steel grids, which are impregnated with a chemical and on which the NO2 sorbs. For a successful measurement, the chromium-steel grids must fit exactly into the caps and be protected from the sunlight. Semadeni was contacted by the city of Zürich with these exact requirements. Thanks to our global purchasing network, we were able to find the exactly fitting, opaquely protective caps that seal flush and airtight and thus allow an exact measurement.
