A spectacle close to nature

A spectacle close to nature

This modern detached house in the Burgdorf area is surrounded by pure nature, even the entire neighborhood is bordered by a colorful flower meadow. The garden, which is surrounded by a generous wild hedge with individual trees, was laid out very naturally and loosely years ago. For the children, now grown up, the proximity to nature and the large play area with volleyball court, sandpit and swings was a real paradise. But in the meantime, the view from the cozy terrace fell on an unused area and called for change.

Desire for a new garden area

The homeowners wanted a new, natural and diverse garden area that would blend seamlessly into the existing surroundings with its beautiful trees and wild hedges. A biopool was to be included and its design and materials were to be in keeping with the architecture of the house. Bathing in naturally purified water, sunbathing on a spacious wooden deck, experiencing and enjoying nature, water and the seasons as intensively as possible - that was the family's dream.

Idea and realization

"Our idea was to create clear lines for the pool, but playfulness in the green spaces and seating areas," explains Andreas Buri from Buri Gartenbau AG, who was commissioned with the planning and implementation. Today, the sky is reflected in the biopool and many flowering perennials make the new part of the garden shine when in bloom. The reflections in the water pick up the moods of the day and make the biopool an eye-catcher at any time of year, acting as both a relaxing and invigorating element. Clouds and thunderstorms suddenly unfold a new sensual dimension and imaginary effect. The wooden elements, which also serve as seating, create an everlasting sense of calm. The wooden walkway by the pool flows ingeniously into an oval island floating above the water.

Solution steps Biopool

To create the desired water reflection, the pool basin had to be black. The natural pool was made to measure by the plastics specialist Semadeni AG with a black plastic basin with an overflow channel. This overflow construction creates a large water tension with the water overflowing at the sides and thus supports the mirror effect of the water surface. The expansion tank is located under the oval wooden grating, which appears to lie on the water surface. The gravel body with plants and microorganisms responsible for cleaning is directly connected to the pool. The natural garden pond serves as an overflow, which has been finished with an EPDM film and the clay obtained from the excavation. There are 2 spotlights in the pool, which create a special atmosphere in the water at night.

Material concept

The wood, Douglas fir and oak, comes directly from an Emmental sawmill and was screwed together on site. Large oak beams were used as seating and path elements, while the steps and the seating element in the pool are made of silver fir. Sandstone from a demolition site was used for the pond overflow. The oak and stone elements were placed floating above the planting.

Planting

A variety of flowering perennials from a nearby nursery give the garden structure. They bloom over a long period of the year and attract insects and micro-organisms. The excess water from the backwash is collected in a small pond with lots of aquatic plants. This provides a home for dragonflies, newts and many other animals. The natural-looking planting was created from many delicate, native perennials. These are joined by a few late bloomers that provide splashes of color well into the fall. This is also when the large cinnamon maple gets its beautiful autumn colors and delights in winter with its decorative bark.
