Customised waste system for Triemli Spital hospital

We are all familiar with the headlines from the tabloid press about “hospital bugs”. Such cases are reported regularly. The hospitals make great efforts to avoid such.

Thus, there is a basic requirement to make sure that work is as sterile as possible for every hospital. Hands are permanently being used at hospitals, whether it be care or kitchen personnel, and bacteria and germs can spread rapidly in the process. The personnel at the Triemli hospital in Zürich expressed the wish to work with a waste container that can be operated by foot instead of with the hands and therefore also supports sterile work. This was the motivation to develop a customised waste system.

Peter Jäger, inventor of the customised waste system, developed, designed and patent-registered a tipping bucket beforehand. The system, a waterproof, sturdy and light container, was then produced by Semadeni in plastic taking all the requirements and needs into account and the prototype was tested at Triemli – the system passed with flying colours! “Effortless, hands-free, hygienic operation is guaranteed with this,” says the satisfied developer Peter Jäger. Since then there has been at least one of these practical tipping buckets in use in every patient’s room, ward and kitchen in the Triemli city hospital’s main building, which makes everyday work a lot easier for the personnel and brings improvements from a hygienic perspective.

The system was built at Semadeni using long-lasting polypropylene. First, the plan was developed using a CAD system; then the systems were constructed using in-house technologies such as cutting, CNC machining and warm-gas welding.  Semi-finished plastic products were used, i.e. plates, tubes, profiles.

Triemli city hospital is a highly modern city-centre hospital in the city of Zürich with a cross-regional catchment area and Switzerland-wide renown. Comprehensive basic and emergency care is ensured for approximately 400,000 people. To this end, 470 beds and a workforce of over 2,600 employees are available.
